Mosaic, my how to.

There are so many things to remember, so many names and I have them all on pieces of paper and I worry that some day I would lose them and so then… Good programmer has backup… so this is my backup :)

What do I need to do my mosaic on wood…

0. If I need framed wood panel it is good to ask Ernie here www.popswoodshop.com

1. First I have to seal wood with solution: water (2) and Elmer’s glue (1)

2. The glue I can use for mosaic can be DAP Kwik Seal Plus (clear – very important if I do not want to deal with white glue after it dried) available in every Home Depot or I can use Weldbond ready to buy in glass shops.

3. Tiles, how to get them… Difficult situation when I am not a specialist in mosaic. I prefer to see before I buy, I choose buy colors and it is really hard to find a good picture of tiles and their colors. There is not any single shop in my area (Redmond, WA).

I can buy by Internet (Thanks Crystal I have this great links and I do not have to spend hours for searching!!!):

- http://www.marylandmosaics.com I bought mixed tiles over there

- http://www.muranomillefiori.com/ Great place for millefiori and blank pendants in good shapes and quality

- http://mosaicsmalti.com/ smalti and trend Italian glass – smooth tiles

- http://www.smalti.com/ with Mexican smalti

I also can go to glass shop and I can cut tiles for myself with the glass cutter I have bought once. It is good to buy some leftovers, broken pieces because the price is really good and with glass cutter I can cut whatever I need to have. In this way I see what I buy. Of course I can not buy some types of tiles that way. Anyway, the two addresses are helpful for me :)

- Cascade Glass Art Center    www.cascadegac.com

9003 151st Avenue Northeast
Redmond, WA 98052-3513
(425) 861-8600

- Jax Stained Glass www.jaxglass.com

12727 Northup Way
Bellevue, WA 98005-1917
(425) 562-9440

4. Tools… I had to learn the names in English… it was fun :)

- wheeled nippers,

- tweezers – VERY helpful,

- dental pick sharp – this is what I need, I have to buy it with my next tile purchase… definitely,

-  ceramic file for smoothing edges or making unique shapes… very helpful,

- glass cutter + mineral oil + breaker,

This is all what I need now at the beginning.

5. GROUT… still mystery for me… I bought one in Michaels and it was already prepared but I need to be able to prepare my color, my mix… so it is part I have to work on it.

6. The last step is to seal the grout… I bought the sealer in hardware store.

I know it is only beginning. If someone have useful place for mosaic supplies please share them with me in your comment :) I would be grateful.
